Why Repair a Cracked Chimney

The chimney’s job is to channel the smoke from your fireplace up and out of your home.  However, when the chimney wall is cracked inside or outside, you may have a serious problem that needs repaired.  Cracks can naturally happen over time or suddenly from earthquakes, storms or large objects hitting it.

As a CSIA certified chimney sweeps, we typically see more damage to older homes, but that doesn’t mean new homes aren’t at risk.  With the recent East coast earthquake, more chimneys have needed repairs to ensure safe use of their fireplace.  You see, chimneys are very rigid and don’t move well with earthquakes.  If you live in areas where the earthquake hit, chimney damage that needs repaired could have easily occurred, even without you knowing it.

Why repair a cracked chimney?

Damaged chimneys can allow toxic gases such as carbon monoxide to leak into your house, creating a serious health hazard.  Even worse, a fire could start in your chimney that could damage or destroy your home and the people in it.

How do you know if you chimney needs repaired?

  • Be sure to check the chimney at least every one or two years for damage
  • Scour the area for missing or loose flashing and any signs of damage to the masonry
  • If you suspect a serious problem, consult with a CSIA certified professional chimney sweep

Should you hire a professional chimney sweep for repairs?

Remember that serious problems need the attention of a professional. Even if you are handy, not all repairs can or should be done by an amateur. Plus, many communities require a permit for chimney work.   We often recommend to our customers that they get a full inspection with our high definition video camera by one of our CSIA certified technicians.
